Rostock – Anyone travelling with their eyes open may already have noticed them: old milestones by the roadside. They often stand inconspicuously in the grass or hidden behind guardrails – and are easy to miss when driving past.

In the project, we are putting precisely these stones in the spotlight. At the moment, we are working with an extensive dataset provided to us by the Milestones Research Group: It documents all locations as well as a wide range of information about the stones within the programme region.
We are now gradually checking all the information on these technical monuments. Step by step, a clearer picture is emerging: where are the milestones located, what condition are they in – and what tasks can we derive from this? Working with these data forms the basis for concrete measures to better preserve this part of road construction history and make it more visible.
